In July 2017, I finally fulfilled a decade-long dream to begin training as a Safari Guide (also known as a Field Guide) with Ecotraining in South Africa. For nearly five months I studied hard – living and learning in the bush itself – and finally qualified as a FGASA Level 1 field guide and back-up trails guide with advanced rifle handling as well as certificates in first aid, birding, tracking and navigation. The course itself was one of the best experiences of my life! Afterwards, I began my internship in a safari lodge in northern Kruger – Return Africa. Since then, I have been working with real guests, mostly shadowing other guides but occasionally getting the chance to guide myself. For most international students, this is where the story ends. But for me, it was just the beginning! With a lot of hard work and determination, I’ve managed to land my dream job at a wonderful lodge in the Klaserie Private Nature Reserve. From here on, you can read about my daily highs and lows and learn exactly what it takes to be a real life safari guide.
